The treaty of Waitangi

Hey guys!

I have been learning about the treaty of Waitangi!
And here is an article about it:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Treaty Of Waitangi!

The treaty of Waitangi is the founding document of New Zealand. It is three articles long, and it was signed at Waitangi, in the Bay of Islands, on the 6th of February, and it has been a public holiday since 1947.

The treaty of Waitangi documents.

The British crown and over 540 Maori cheifs, including 13 women, signed the treaty. To make it easier to sign, Lieutenant Henry Williams converted the treaty into Maori, so that the Maori could sign it without being confused, and the British signed the English version.

A Maori person signing the treaty.

As I said, the treaty consists of 3 articles. Number 1 says that, in the maori version of the treaty, that Queen Victoria could maintain and look after NZ, but the maori cheifs and kings were sill the rulers, but in the English version, it meant that Queen Victoria was now the ruler of NZ. So that was a misunderstanding. Number 2 says, in the maori treaty, that the maori cheifs were the rulers of the maori villages, but it also gave permission for the British to buy land of them. In the English version, it meant that the Maori could fish, hunt and do many other things, and it also said that the British could by land of the Maori. And number number 3 said that, in both treaties, that the Maori had the Quenns protection and the same rights as the British.

The New Zealand crown.

The British crown were the monarchy of the United Kingdom. The treaty meant that the Maori would let British settlers settle in New Zealand. That was also why it was important, because otherwise, the British couldn't come and build their own goverment and they couldn't settle there. Back then, the maori outnumbered the British by at least 10,000 people! But that quickly changed.

The treaty house, where the treaty os being held.

The reason is, when the British first came, not many volunteered, so there weren't a lot of people that came. And as I said, the maori outnumbered them by 10,000. But, after the treaty was signed, as the treaty meant that British settlers could settle in NZ, lots more British people started to come and started to settle. You would think that it would be hard to find land if the maori had already taken up all of NZ, right? Well, that's not entirely true. The British had a way around it. They bought land off Maori land owners for British money, or pounds. In a few years, all of the south island and one quater of the north island had been bought by the British.

British ships.

Soon enough, the British made a goverment, and we all lived together. The rules of the treaty still apply today. That is why we can all live in peace and harmony.

The End!

The battle of Rangiriri Paa!

Hey guys!

During the holidays, I went to the place where the battle of Rangariri Paa happened.
During the war there were two armies:
1: The 65th regiment of the British army.
2: The Maori army led by their king, Tawhiao.

I have written 2 stories; one from a British soldier's perspective of the battle, and the other from a Maori warrior's perspective.

I have also made a movie of Rangiriri paa, so PLEASE check it out!
Here they are:

PART ONE:
(FROM A BRITISH SOLDIERS PERSPECTIVE)

My name is Sam Bravefield. Too bad my last name doesn't reflect who I am. To be honest, I'm A BIG, FAT CHICKEN! My last name's the whole reason I'm in this battle. My mum and dad are so proud of me for going, whereas I was the one who tried to tell them I didn't wanna go! They made me!:-(
Anyway, I'm going to this weird and foreign country. it called....wait a minute....New..Zealand? OK... I've never heard of it!
Oh well, it's not like I'm under a real mean commander, who always yells at you, even for trying to go to the bathroom!
Right?

OK fine, that is my commander. His name is Lieutenant-General Duncan Cameron.
OK, so let's get on with real life now.
It's 20th November. My birthday. JUST GREAT! Best way to celebrate your birthday, go and try to kill someone, or to get killed! YAY!
I've just realised that I'm late. That has to be the worst thing that could happen right now!
I run up to the Waikato river bank, which we are going to cross and start firing.
My uniform and helmet clatter as I run up to the bank as fast as I can.
The general isn't happy to see me late.

"BRAVEFIELD! WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?!" he shouts.
"SHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!" many people shush him.
"Oh yeah. Bravefield, where have you been?" he demands.
"Um... I'm sorry, I don't know." I reply.
"What?!?!?!?! You don't know?!"
"Oh come on dude! We can let him go, just this one time!" Joe Jackesone say, putting his arm around my shoulder.
"Yeah, come on! Let him go!" Terri Oxeon, Bill Xenon and DP say.
We don't know what DP means, he likes to keep it a secret.
"OK fine! But if you do it again, you're..."
"Yeah, he gets it." Joe says, interrupting him.
"OK, are we ready?" The General says.
"Sir, yes sir!" we say.
"Let's go!!!!!!"

We get into boats and we cross the Waikato.
Then, we hide in the hills. Some people are hiding the boats away.
I look around. I can't see any Maori people anywhere.
(US, TRYING TO FIND THE MAORI(THEY'RE REAL GOOD AT HIDING!)!!)
All I can see are these big holes in the ground. I think they are trenches.
We climb up, and we can see thier fort.
I like nothing I've seen before.
OUR FORT LOOKS SO MUCH NEATER. NOT TO MENTION COOLER!
"Ready, fire!!!" The General whispers loudly.

We all start shooting at will, but we still can't see anything.
Then, we hear footsteps behind us. I turn around, and Terri is there, try to scare me!
I yelp.
"HA HA! Scaredy pants! Man, this battle has you all rattled up, doesn't it?"
"T! Not funny!" I say, annoyed. T is his nickname.
"OK, sorry. He he! You should have seen your face!" And he disappears.
Literally disappears.
"T? Where'd ya go?" I say, quivering.
I turn around and my regiments not there!
I can here them up on the hill, fighting!
I can hear the deafening roar of the artillery and the shells whistling over my head as they shot across!
"Really?AHHHHHHH!" I think.
I run up and start fighting.

We go and fight. I'm impressed by the Maori warrior's bravery. They're good!! We saw some outlying defences outside the fort. We take some artillery and completely destroy them! By we, I mean, of course, Me, Joe, DP, Bill and Terri.
"Happy birthday dude!" everyone say, happily, and present me with a cake made of mud and topped with a half broken shell.
"Yeah thanks guys! That's awesome!" I say joyfully, and a little bit sadly, as I'm not around my family.
"I made it myself!" Bill brags.
"Shut up Bill!" Terri says!
"Yeah, no-one likes a show-off!" DP says, annoyed.
"Shut up guys!" Joe says
We also have a ladder that we are going to put on the main fort so we can destroy it, but when we put the ladder there, it just doesn't stay. Terri nearly fell of testing it! We try and try but we keep failing, ans soon we are going to attract Maori warriors to us! SO we decide to camp and hide in some tents we brought until night.

A few hours pass, and I'm dead. Not literally, but I'm exhausted. I haven't killed anyone, but still...
It's 10:30, and we got to bed.
In the morning, we see a white flag hoisted up on the hill.
"They surrender! Yes, we can go get them now!" I hear people saying.
Next thing I know, we have already has breakfast, and we are going up to the hills.
When we reach the top, we see lots of men and children just standing there, doing absolutely nothing.

Unfortunately, half of them were killed in the next 5 minutes.
The rest ran way as fast as they could.
The General asked us to go and find the chiefs and the king.
But they were no-where to be seen.
Then, looking at the horizon. I saw a waka on the other side of the lake. They had escaped during the night!
And that meant that the Maori wanted to negotiate! Not surrender!
Oh no!
I told the General, and his reply was "Oh? Then, I guess what else can we do? Never mind."
Never mind?!?! I had a right mind to slap him!
But I couldn't.
OBVIOUSLY!

We were all on our way back, when we were ambushed!
Half of our regiment died. Me, Joe, Terri, Bill, and DP were lucky to be alive.
Us and some others, including The General.
We lost so many people.
It was heart-breaking.
We all decided it was time to go home.
Once we got home, we were all confronted to our BIG, BIG, BIG, BIG, BIG BOSS!

OMG!
I was petrified!
He was the boss of the army!
He congratulated us though, mostly for surviving. And he wished me a happy birthday.
And then he let us go home.
Me, my friends (you know who I mean!) and my family all shared a big, luscious chocolate cake (Joe had 3 pieces, and took one home!)! It was delicious!
I will never forget the battle.
Sam Bravefield

OK, so that is from a British soldiers perspective, now time for the Maori warrior's perspective!
Here it is:

PART TWO:

(FROM A MAORI WARRIOR'S PERSPECTIVE)

I am a Maori warrior. My name is TeArapa. I have been chosen to come to this war because I am one of the bravest, fastest, smartest, and coolest men here!
I mean, that can't be hard, can it?
Well, you see, being cool and smart and all that is what makes me nominated for so many things!
Like, mascots, actors, leaders, presenters, and way, WAY more!
I am with the army, and I was PROMOTED because I was cool and smart and all of that jazz!
OK, so we are about to go out to war.
In my opinion, it's real hard to get around our fort! Everything is everywhere and NEVER(!) where you want it to be!
Now to real life:
It's currently 4:30 in the morning, and we are all having breakfast and doing some warm-ups.
They are so hard!
Well, not that I'm complaining! I'm not even doing them! I'm watching my troops do them.
"TROOPS!" I yell, and the all look up at me, tired and puffed.
"Stop.... now!" I yell again.
They all stop, puffing and panting.
"You may sit down!" I say.
They all collapse on the floor and start talking.
My best friend, Haraka, comes and pats me on the back. He's at the same level as me, just works with a different troop.
"Dude, we are about to go into the war! Are you ner...!" he starts, but is interrupted by are boss. a.k.a the king, Tawhiao.
"ALL CHIEFS COME HERE!!"
"Yes, I am nervous!" I whisper.
We all run towards him.
"OK, so here is the plan. After today, so at night we shall cross the lake and retreat!" he says.
All the chiefs gasp.
"OK, we'll do it!" we all say; except for me and Haraka.
and then he told us to go, get our troops, and meet outside in the trenched.
I am flabbergasted. Why would he do that?
Oh well, we have to wait and see.
Now, I don't have time to explain the whole battle, but I can tell it to you in a quick way.
I don't have the time, because we have to go and see if Tawhiao is OK after taking a bullet to the head. We have to go and check in 5 minutes.
So basically...
-We hid in trenches we had dug.
-We peered over and saw the British regiment coming (EEK!)
-Some chiefs got some boats ready (WHAT?!?!?)
-Me and Haraka could see the shells exploding and roaring like the roar of an angry lion.
-We fought, and thwarted 5 British soldiers trying to climb a ladder. One of them almost fell of trying to test the ladder!
So that was basically it.
(US,HIDING IN THE TRENCHES AND LOOKING AT THE BRITISH(WHAT WE COULD SEE OF THEM!)!!)

Now I have to go and check.
All the chiefs run toward him. All of them have bags, except for me and Haraka.
We all go and see him. He has some sorta red liquid coming out of his head, and it's not blood.
I look closer. It's...
Wait...is that...
 Blood CRANBERRY JUICE?!?!
And there's a bullet piece of Moro chocolate where the bullet is supposed to be!

Oh My God!
I was all a trick so that we could run away!
It's now 10:10 at night, and the chiefs all go and board boats.
"TeArapa! Haraka? Aren't you coming?" one of them says.
"Um.... we'll stay to create a diversion and we won't say where you are!" I suggest, crossing my fingers that the won't suspect us of not wanting to come.
Haraka nods his head vigorously.
"Sure! This is what I mean by this guy being smart!" the king says.
I breath a sigh of relief.
And off they went.
Then we all went to sleep.
In the morning me and Haraka go and put up a  white flag on to of the hill, hoping he British will see and try to negoti-
Wait...what are they doing??!?!
They're attacking us!
AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!
We lost lots of people.
We were the only survivors, along with 5 others.
We decided to go back home.
That was the battle.
So that's the end.
Bye!
TeArapa and Haraka.

OK, so that's the perspective side of things, now, I have done a movie about it too!
Here it is:

OK, so that's it guys!
I hope you enjoyed!

Thanks!
Maya.
