What is mass?

What is mass?

Hey guys!

For maths this term, Habitat 17 have been focusing on geometry and measurement. We had some choices that we could choose from to work on. I chose mass. I decided to learn a bit more about mass. Here are some things about mass:

- An object on earth weighs 5 kg. If you put it on the moon, it would weigh less on the moon but still have the same mass.

-If you use Newtonian physics, mass is the amount of material in the object. Newtonian physics deals with specificity.

-Inertia is how easy an object can stop and start. Newton's 1st law says that an object that is easy to move has low inertia and an object that is harder to move has high inertia.

- Einstein quite famously said: E=mc^2, which means Energy equals mass into the speed of light squared.

- MASS IS NOT THE SAME AS WEIGHT!!!!!

Celtic curves!

Celtic curves!

Hi guys!

For a project in the school holidays, I decided to learn about Celtic curves. My aunt is engaged to an Irishman, and that also gave me the inspiration to do the project. To find out how I did it and info, please watch the video below!

Cross Country!

Cross Country!

Hello everyone!

On Thursday 30th August 2016, Bayview school had their cross country race. I was feeling nervous and anxious, but also excited and exhilarated. Our school was split up into eight, nine, ten and eleven year old boy and girl groups, and then Ms Berquist got up. She said that we would go in age groups to start the race. Eight year old boys, and then eight year old girls. Nine year old boys... and so on. Ms Berquist let eight and nine year olds go, and then I went. I was feeling very nervous again, as I really wanted to go into interschool. When I got to the foot of Simon Alice, I started jogging. Then, it was the big hill, so I paced myself really slowly. When I got to the top of the hill, I was exhausted. Mrs Nicholas gave me a yellow line on my hand, and then it was down hill. I felt very  when the little kids were cheering me on. Then, at the foot to the gate of the school, I had done one lap. Only a half lap to go! So I jogged my way to the foot of Simon Alice, and then jogged really slowly. I was feeling proud at this point because I had done so much! I found the alleyway up to school, and then ran up there. When I reached to top court, I clutched my stomach. I had lots of stitches! I felt tired and glad that I had finished the race! I was surprised to see that I had come really close to going to interschool! You see, the top five from each age group, boys and girls, go to interschool! I was feeling exhausted and very pleased to have done such an achievement!

Our Calendar Art!

Our Calendar Art!

Hello everyone!

On Monday,Habitat 17 did our calendar art. First, we watched a video. The website is called art for kids club, and they have lots of awesome tutorials you can draw. Here is my link:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4f_gQH7Skk

Then we did a draft on what animal we wanted to do. Once we finished our draft, we did the good copy. We copied the same thing as our draft onto a calendar sheet of paper. We started with vivid straight. Once we were done, we had to colour with pastel. Finally, we dyed. Not literally! With dye. Here is a picture of me with my calendar.

Show don't tell!

Show don't tell!

Hello everyone!
This morning,Habitat 17 did a writing sample about showing instead of telling. We had to do feelings. You had to write down how the were feeling, very simply(tell)and you also had to write down a more exciting paragraph(Show.)

Here is my writing sample, the show part.Let's see if you can find out how Amber is feeling!

Show:Amber’s face brightened. Her smile broadened. A lot. Her eyes shimmered with happiness. She had tears in her eyes. Her mood immediately changed. She raised her hands to her mouth in happiness. She started to jump feverishly. Her hand loosened and they just relaxed. But they were still a little tight with excitement. Her voice was high with excitement and she had the slightest tint of relief in her voice. She was the most happy she had ever been.

Can you guess how Amber's feeling?

Write down your answer in the comments below!

The tree octopus!

Tree Octopuses!

Hello everyone!

Habitat 17 have been learning about the tree octopus. It is a VERY fascinating creature! But,there are debates.Wikipedia says that the tree octopus is an internet hoax but there are photos and videos of the tree octopus! This is what the tree octopus looks like:

Odd,ay?

It lives in trees and is very rare. Here is a doc me and my group did on the tree octopus:

What we know…

  • It’s scientific name is Octopus Paxarbolis.
  • The like to be in pooled water

What we wonder...
  • I wonder how does the tree octopus survive living in the forest and not the water?
  • I wonder if the tree octopuses scared of humans?
  • I wonder if they live in the water?
  • I wonder if the tree grows under water?
  • I wonder if the tree octopus is predator or prey?
  • I wonder what the prey the tree octopus have?
  • I wonder if they live on fruit trees?
  • I wonder if they live underwater on the trees?
  • Are they fake?
  • Do they eat fruit?
  • What do they

What we have learned

  • They are fake!!!!!!!
  • They are endangered creatures.
  • They eat shellfish,snails,turtles, especially crabs,lobsters.
  • They live on the eastern side of the Olympic mountain range, adjacent to Hood Canal.
  • Their history is really sad.
  • They were viewed as a nonsense.

Numbers Before And After!

Numbers Before And After!

Hello everyone!
Yesterday,I learnt my number before and after to one million.

For example,if you take the number 478,the number before is 477 and the number after is 479.

Here is some evidence of my work:

Place Value Workshop!

Mrs Matuku's Workshop On Place Value!

Hello everyone!

Yesterday,Mrs Matuku did a workshop on place value. We were learning how many tens in a number.Mrs Matuku gave an example which was the number five hundred and twenty seven, and we had to write two ways of writing the same number using the columns hundreds, tens and units/ones.
These are the two ways to do it:

1:Five hundreds, two tens and seven ones.
2:Fifty-two tens and seven ones.

She also told us of a website that would help us learn our place value. Here is the link:

And here is a photo of my work(one page of it!)

These are some numbers that Mrs Matuku gave us.And they are split into the two ways that they can be split into.

My Pi Day Star Of David!

Hello everyone!
Yesterday was the 22 of the 7th month. So the short date is 22/7.That division is called pi.It goes on,quite literally,FOREVER!

Image result for rainbow pi images

So,to celebrate pi day,I did a star of David using the numbers of pi.Not all of them!.It was in the shape of David's star, which looks like this:

Image result for star of david

My star of David has got twelve triangles:six on the outside, and six on the inside, and a dot in the center. My birth date, the 21st,is a triangular number. So in all twelve triangles,I took out the triangles and replaced the triangle with little circles and ended up with two hundred and fifty three circles!I assigned ten colours to each digit that appears in pi,zero-nine.I did the first two hundred and fifty three digits of pie. Here is the colour code I used:

And here is the star of David(It's very colourful,ay?):
